A Bedtime Fairy Tale
The dust motes, stirred up by the wind that whistled through the cracks, glittered in the moonlight like snowflakes. The air was cold and damp and smelled of musty wood, old fabric, and dried herbs. The narrowness of the room was physically palpable in the dark, as if the walls had edged closer under the cover of the shadows. The outlines of age-warped furniture could be made out in the faint moonlight. Next to the window, shut with rickety shutters, a heavy cupboard leaned against the wall. The door beside it hung loose on its hinges, and a scant, dirty light dribbled through the gap. In the middle of the room a figure crouched on a rickety chair.
“And so it came to pass that they vanished and were never seen again.” The old, rough voice, whose rasping sound shredded the soft melody of the night, sounded self-satisfied. “But…” Its tone rose, almost a little shrill. “But one would come from the other world to find them again.” It broke off.
In the dark the chair creaked as the bent silhouette rocked back and forth, the head thrust far forward, as if the person it belonged to had just fallen asleep sitting up. Beside the chair, under the window, the outlines of a small child’s bed were barely discernible. From within it came a faint croak.
The human shadow in the chair started up.
“All right, all right!” the old voice sounded soothing. “I’ll go on. Let me think…” Only a soft, labored, stop-and-go breathing could be heard. “But… she failed miserably!” the voice rose, triumphant. “For she was unprepared, she had no idea what to do, and she didn’t even pass her first test! Yes, that’s how it was.” Again the chair creaked under the silhouette’s rocking. “Yes, that’s how it was!” the voice repeated, growing ever quieter.
From the little bed beside the chair came a timid cackle before it fell silent again. Nothing moved anymore; even the creaking had fallen asleep. The wind brushed softly around the house, as if it wanted to lull the inhabitants to sleep with its whispered song. An owl lamented in the distance, when suddenly the silhouette flinched.
“She already failed her first test!” croaked the voice into the night, as if to prevent any misunderstandings from arising. “She failed the first test!” it repeated again and again. “Someone had already seen to that!”
The little bed beside the chair trembled.
“Shh—shh—shh,” whispered the voice, and then it was quiet again.
